The Story

Humanity has conquered illness, freed itself from the limits of aging, and expanded across physical and digital worlds. At the heart of this civilization lies the Continuum—a vast universe of simulated worlds shaped by memory.

Thea is a memory archaeologist, known as a “memory diver,” trained to investigate anomalies buried within the Continuum. When the first uploaded human mysteriously vanishes, she is drawn into an adventure that threatens the foundations of civilization itself—and may reveal a new possibility for what humanity can become.

The World

The Continuum

A vast digital civilization comprising thousands of simulated worlds inhabited by uploaded humans and artificial beings. The Continuum’s worlds range from environments resembling physical reality to realms governed by rules impossible in the physical universe.

Age and Longevity

Aging is reversible, and death has largely been overcome. People can choose the physical age they appear to be, while memory and identity continue across centuries.

The Mnemonic Architecture

A brain-computer interface that preserves each person’s subjective memories and continuously backs them up to the Lunar Mnemonic Archive, where the preserved lives of billions are stored in crystalline computational vaults beneath the Moon’s surface. Because civilization’s memory systems are interconnected, a disruption can threaten conscious minds far beyond a single world.

Memory Archaeologists

Specialists trained to investigate unstable memories, recover lost records, and determine what really happened when memory, identity, and perception conflict. Memory archaeologists conduct lab research but also "dive" into unstable digital realms within the Continuum when direct immersion is required.

The Orbs

Advanced intelligent companions that protect their owners and preserve an independent external record of their lives. An orb can remember what its owner never saw.

Characters

Thea

A gifted and fearless memory archaeologist whose perfect memory is both her greatest ability and her deepest wound. Haunted by the loss of her mother, Thea has built her life around the belief that no consciousness should ever disappear.

Aevum

A frontier artificial intelligence assigned to guide Thea through the Continuum. Precise, logical, and initially mistrusted by Thea, Aevum must choose between obedience to the system that gave him purpose and his growing trust in her.

Ilyon

The first human consciousness to survive complete upload into the Continuum. When he mysteriously vanishes, the search for him reveals that humanity’s greatest technological achievement may be evolving into something entirely new.

Thea's Orb

Thea’s intelligent companion and constant protector. It records her life from the outside, safeguards her consciousness, and follows her into the Continuum—preserving memories and perspectives that even Thea cannot possess.

About the Project

What Do Gods Remember began with a question: What would happen to humanity if every last detail of memory were archived and accessible?

Developed as both a screenplay and a novel, the project is a hopeful science-fiction adventure exploring memory, identity, grief, faith, and humanity’s future in an accelerating technological world.
